The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), commonly known as AACSB International, is a nonprofit organisation that advances quality and continuous improvement in business and management education worldwide.
Founded in 1916 in the United States, AACSB has developed into an international network of business schools, educators, and organisations committed to improving business education.
Its activities include business school accreditation, accounting accreditation, professional development, research, and collaboration among academic institutions.
Unlike a university, AACSB does not primarily award academic degrees; it evaluates business schools and eligible academic units against established quality standards.
AACSB’s principal service is business school accreditation, which assesses areas such as strategic planning, faculty qualifications, curriculum quality, student learning outcomes, research, and societal impact.
Its accreditation process involves institutional self-evaluation, mentoring and guidance where applicable, independent peer review, and formal decisions by its accreditation bodies. Accredited schools must continue demonstrating improvement through periodic reviews.
AACSB also offers separate, additional accreditation for accounting programmes. Its approach emphasises continuous improvement rather than requiring every institution to follow an identical educational model.
AACSB is widely regarded as an influential specialist accreditor in business education. Its international reach and established peer-review framework distinguish it from organisations that primarily issue membership certificates or private quality seals without a comparable evaluation process.
In April 2026, AACSB members ratified its new Global Standards for Business Education, strengthening the organisation’s framework for quality, learner success, continuous improvement, and societal impact. The updated standards are being introduced through a transition period beginning in 2026.
An important distinction is that AACSB membership does not mean a business school is AACSB-accredited. The organisation explicitly states that accreditation is granted only after a school completes the required evaluation and satisfies its standards.
Accreditation may apply to a defined business school or academic unit within a larger university, rather than automatically covering every programme offered by the entire institution.
Furthermore, AACSB accreditation is a specialised quality indicator; it does not replace a country’s legal requirements for university registration, degree-awarding authority, or professional licensing.
Overall, AACSB is an established international quality assurance organisation with a substantial role in business education.
Before choosing a business or management programme, I recommend that you check AACSB’s official directory to confirm that the specific school or academic unit is currently accredited and verify that the university and qualification meet the recognition requirements in your country.

AACSB accreditation can be a strong quality indicator for business schools, but membership alone doesn’t mean a school has earned accreditation. It’s a small detail that could easily mislead prospective students if they don’t check the official directory.
