AACSB’s 2026 State of Accreditation Report Highlights Global Trends and Challenges in Business Education

Accreditation Report

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) has released its 2026 State of Accreditation Report: 5th Edition, highlighting global accreditation trends, institutional challenges, and emerging priorities shaping business education.

The report draws on accreditation reviews conducted between July 2025 and June 2026 and examines how business schools are advancing academic quality, strengthening institutional strategies, and measuring their contributions to society.

Global Accreditation Continues to Expand

As of June 30, 2026, AACSB reported 1,806 business schools holding its business accreditation. Over five years, the number of accredited schools grew by 14.3 percent globally, with particularly strong growth in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), at 36.6 percent, and Asia Pacific, at 29 percent.

During the 2025–26 reporting year, 35 schools achieved initial business accreditation, reflecting continued international interest in quality assurance and academic standards.

New Standards Introduced for Business Education

In April 2026, AACSB members ratified the new Global Standards for Business Education. The updated framework maintains a mission-driven approach while emphasizing academic quality, continuous improvement, student success, and societal impact.

Selected accredited institutions will pilot the new standards during the 2026–27 academic year. Broader implementation is planned for accreditation visits beginning in 2027–28.

Faculty Capacity and Strategic Planning Remain Challenges

The report identifies faculty qualifications and staffing capacity as recurring concerns. Some institutions struggle to maintain appropriately qualified faculty across individual disciplines, particularly amid recruitment difficulties, retirements, and program expansion.

Strategic planning is another area requiring improvement. AACSB encourages business schools to establish measurable objectives, clear performance indicators, defined responsibilities, and stronger risk management and financial sustainability plans.

AI and Innovation Reshape Business Education

The report’s five-year retrospective highlights the growing influence of artificial intelligence in business education. By 2025–26, AI was mentioned in 95 percent of continuous improvement review reports, while 54 percent specifically referenced generative AI.

Technology-related programs are also expanding. Analytics, data science, and AI accounted for 19 percent of new degree programs analyzed, while technology-related offerings represented 28 percent when information systems and technology programs were included.

These findings demonstrate how AI is increasingly influencing curriculum development, institutional strategy, and the skills business graduates need.

Greater Emphasis on Measurable Societal Impact

AACSB also stresses that business schools must demonstrate tangible outcomes from their research and community engagement. Institutions are encouraged to align societal impact initiatives with their missions and strategic priorities and establish meaningful measures of their effectiveness.

The takeaway: AACSB’s 2026 report highlights a changing business education landscape in which accreditation increasingly emphasizes measurable outcomes, qualified faculty, strategic resilience, technological innovation, and demonstrable contributions to society.
